Description

The Newly-Redesigned Flagship Shimano MTB Pedal

With Shimano recently updating its venerable XTR group, the M9100 series pedals get a redesign as well, providing more stability, and the ability to shed mud better than ever before, along with 2 spindle length options. These improvements are the result of a refined pedal body shape that offers a wider edge-to-edge contact area over the outgoing 9000 pedals for an increased shoe to pedal interface and thus, better power transmission. It also features rounded edges to help shed mud and prevent accumulation.

The retention mechanism is basically the same as the benchmark SPD pedals that's been around for decades with wide, open-ended tabs that allow easy entry and security when clipped in. The open design allows muck to flow through, so it doesn't hamper your ability to engage in a hurry and you can get back in quickly after an impromptu hike-a-bike or remounting after a sandy 'cross pit. The larger flat platforms on the inboard and outboard edges are also a boon to gravel riders looking to keep the sole of your shoe solid on the pedal, as are the two spindle lengths (52 and 55mm) to dial in your fit.

Features:

  • An updated XTR pedal with more stability and better mud clearing
  • 2 spindle lengths, 52 and 55mm for dialing in the fit
  • Large contact plate improves shoe to pedal interface
  • The gold standard pedal for XC, CX, and gravel riders
  • Improved bike control with wider edge-to-edge contact area
  • More solid pedal-shoe interface allows you to focus on riding
  • Improved axle durability
  • Dual-sided binding with integrated cage guides foot for easy stepping-in
  • Compatible with included SM-SH51 cleat or optional SM-SH56 cleat
  • 9/16" spindle
  • Available in standard or short axle versions
  • Weight: 314g pair

Narrow spindles FTW
by Wrightwoodrides

Shimano pedals are the gold standard for pedals in terms of functionality and durability. Bombproof, no off-plane movement between shoe and pedal, thoughtful release value range. The 52mm spindle versions take things a step farther by getting your effective Q factor closer to that of a road bike. Great for folks like me with narrow hips who split their time on- and off-road. Highly recommend for folks sensitive to the ever-increasing Q factor of today's MTBs but don't want to compromise functionality.

My pedal of choice
by Robert Bedard
Santa Cruz

This is my 3rd set of these pedals. I have them on 3 different bikes, the oldest set are on a 1997 Santa Cruz Heckler. I have been beating on that set for over 25 years. They hold up well to pedal strikes, the axles are all still straight. This newest set went on a restored Kos Kruiser. Love these pedals.

Bulletproof MTB Pedals

Shimano XTR pedals are light, durable and maintenance-free. The cleat to pedal attach point is smooth and consistent. No higher bar than XTR.

A replacement for a road pedal.

My road shoes never fit well because lack of cleat adjustment. These pedals work with my gravel shoes which have a lot of cleat adjustment. Basically these Shimano XTR pedals were less expensive than a new pair of road shoes.

Great pedak
by SJ

This is my second set of these pedals. Both on 3rd Generation Domane and on 4th generation Domane. I went with these because fairly light weight, low profile. Easy to clip in, always the right side up. When you go from stop position. Great pedal if you get them on sale. I would buy again.

Not worth the price

Frequent year 'round gravel and road riding. Easy enter and release. My first pair wore out and were replaced under warranty. They are easy to maintain so I'm on top of it more often now. One major design flaw: What's with the sharp concave edges on the ends of the spindle housing? Real ankle-biters if you scrape up against them. I will dull them off with a file once they're out of warranty (if they last that long!). The ends should be shaped just the opposite in a convex shape.

It's awesome to be able to count on excellence when buying a cycling product Shimano delivers again on these Dura Ace pedals.

Big thanks to Shimano for offering this pedal in a short axle version for those of us who need smaller Q factors.

These pedals are great for my gravel bike! I previously ran M324's before i knew for aure i wanted to run clipless but those became heavy and cumbersome the more i got into it. These are easy to clip in, nice and light, and simple to adjust!

My favorite XC pedals

I have ridden every top-end model of Shimano clipless XC pedals since 1990. They have always and continue to work very well. I like the shorter Q available on this particular version. I never think about them-perfect.

I've ridden several permutations of this pedal for years, and I can say they are the best you can buy; solid, stable beautifully engineered and machined.

I've ridden these on mountain and electric bikes, and several recumbent trikes. I've ridden other brands, but the SPD's are the most stable; beautifully engineered and machined. They've never failed me.

Best pedal on the planet

Shimano xtr race pedals are fantastic. No bearing issues, just smooth pedalling.

I've been mountain biking since 1987 and while I have tried other pedals, only Shimano has the one pedal I always want. Do it!

SPD. XTR. What else needs to be said?
by Adam Hancock

These pedals do the trick. I've been on SPD pedals in some shape or form for 30 years. They're bomber, decently lightweight, and reliable. It's safe to say that these are the gold standard for clipless pedals. Sure. There are lighter options, pedals with larger platforms, etc., but if you're looking for a solid pedal with versatility for days, these are the one to get.

light and not bulky...which explains the light part
by gcarter

i have been a user of xtr and xt pedals for years. pros for these are that they are thinner in height. this is why i bought them. i have broken several pairs of xt and xtr's due to pedal strikes and this new series is a bit thinner. don't know if it'll help, but it can't hurt.
