Description
Your Shimano Road Pedal Refresh is Just a Click Away
Shimano SPD-SL road pedals and cleats are the standard among professional and amateur cyclists looking for a stable platform, simple functionality, and long-lasting performance. The wide, low-profile cleats distribute force evenly and allow for stable walkability off the bike without needing to carry special cleat covers for your mid-ride coffee stop.
There are three different models of Shimano SPD-SL cleats to choose from that are designated by three colors: yellow, red, and blue. Each of the cleats offers unique features, including different float ranges and pivot points, and are designed with specific rider biomechanics in mind.
Float Factor:
Float refers to the back-and-forth movement of the foot while you are clipped in and is essentially how much you can point your toes left or right while your shoe is attached to your pedal. Different levels of float help accommodate different riding styles or help with biomechanical issues such as lack-of-flexibility, past injuries, or knee pain. While float can help reduce stress on joints and make for a more comfortable pedaling movement, it can also result in a feeling of diminished power transfer if your foot moves around too much.
Available In Three Versions:
Blue: 1 degree float in each direction (2 degrees total float); Front-center-pivoting (pivots on fixed front and floats in rear)
Yellow: 3 Degrees float in each direction (6 degrees total float); Front and rear of cleat float (Pivots on cleat center)
Red: 0 degree Float; Fixed
Features:
Strong and long wearing lightweight nylon resin construction
Rubber grips make walking easier
Includes mounting hardware
Compatible with all SPD-SL pedals
For use with 3-bolt standard road shoes

Reliable cleats

Have been using these cleats for years and find them reliable and long lasting (just don't walk around too much in them.) Gives a solid foundation on the pedal, and the blue ones have just the right amount of float.

If you're confident in your bike fit and cleat placement, you can't beat 0 degree float cleats for your Shimano pedals! They're the best for power transfer.

I've used Shimano cleats since my first pair of specialty shoes. The colored plastic parts tend to wear out sooner than I'd like but that's neither here nor there. The reason I'm writing a review, though, is that Shimano is no longer using those nasty plastic clam packages. My purchase came in a recyclable paper box. It won't change the world or solve the world's problem with plastics, but it's a move in the right direction. Good on Shimano.

Always buy the original
I have tried the copies of the genuine Shimano cleats sold on some websites and have found they don't clip in or out smoothly and the money saved is not worth the poor performance. The genuine Shimano cleats always work as intended and the new packaging is both eco-friendly and easier to open.

Yellow best
The Shimano SPD-SL cleats are ideally suited for cyclists at all levels. They provide maximum float without sacrificing power transfer. Also, they are extremely durable as long as you don't walk down stone pathways on a frequent basis. They are a fine investment.

I buy the blue cleats and they are perfect. The tension is adjustable, and the function is well thought out. I have yet to use a cleat that I liked better. Just top notch. it's a 6 star cleat.

Been using these since their very beginning. They outwear most others and perform flawlessly. Not much else to add.

Great cleat, especially on sale, bought many pairs
by Don

Great cleat and fairly long lasting. I change out every 1,000 to 1,500 miles because I end up walking around in these cleats and the yellow bits will get ragged. I have come out of these cleats stomping on the pedals, out of the saddle, when going through a corner. So I may try the lesser float cleats, though I've been through many pairs of these cleats with just a couple of incidents.

Great cleat, allows a little but not too much float

Always get these Shimano SPD-SL blue cleats. Work great, just enough flex in the float without too much.

Real deal
They work! Need I say more? Replace them when the black plastic wears stretch their life by using Shoe Goo or similar product to replace worn off yellow/blue/red rubber. It works.

OEM Blue cleats for the win

Chose blue cleats after many years of riding the stock yellow ones. Quicker and more confident click in out. Don't really notice the difference in flat, I guess my pedaling style is pretty consistent. These OEM Shimano cleats last forever, unless you walk all over the place on pavement with them on, which is foolish.

Don't buy those cheap knock offs

These are the real thing, I purchased Amazon knock offs and had annoying squeaking issues. The knock off cleats are not a good fit to the pedal

Secure, but wore quickly
by Joe

Just switched to Shimano Ultegra pedals after a few years on Look Keo pedals (which I stopped used because the metal plate had lost adhesion to the pedal body). I like the near-zero float of these cleats - feels secure. But the wear on the cleats from walking was much faster than what I experienced with the Look cleats. On both shoes, the outside cushion was gone in a week of riding, and further wear on the plastic under the cushion has resulted in a tilted walking surface and less grip. I know, who walks on road cleats? But it's different. Still, the grip to the pedal is good.

You do not slip when walking! The cleats are easy in and out. But the best, when you stop and put your foot on the ground you do not slip. The yellow contact points, keep your foot from slipping.

Cleats mostly ok

Decided not to take away a star because one set of the cleats had a bad screw. That screw did cause me to have to get a threading tool and chase the threads in one of my shoes, very scary. Don't buy these till they go on sale, the price has doubled on them in the last couple of years. I also tried the cheap chinese knockoffs, they worked ok but they only last a few weeks and the colored knobs on the cleats fall off after a few days...
