Had been riding for about two years without a computer, and before that had a 540 Plus bundle with gen 1 HRM and sensors. This 840 bundle was quite the upgrade - the touchscreen, incredible battery life, and newer sensors definitely have come a long way. Bundle-wise, Garmin's got the value pretty much locked in at this price point, including every sensor, ( but power ) plus a tether and out-front mount in the box. The impressively bright screen is very visible in all conditions including direct sunlight. After some consideration I opted not to get the solar model, as I found it was not worth the extra coin. Reports from riders in the Southwest US claiming very marginal addition to battery life...like 5 minutes. There is a good comparison between the 840, the Wahoo Roam, and the Hammerhead Karoo 2 on the dcrainmaker . com. Connectivity between the 840, mobile phone, and Garmin Connect software is perfect. Last but not least, it works flawlessly with the Varia products - both the UT800 front light and RTL515 rear light / radar.
Yes, Garmin's are expensive. But, they work so well!
The touch screen works great even when wet.
The latest OS for Garmin works very well with the touch inputs and is so much faster than having to click thru multiple menus. The side buttons are still available for most functions if you prefer them.
I am so happy I got it. See the DC Rainmaker reviews on YT for more details. They do a good job.
