Silca Chain Waxing System

Better product to melt wax than a crock pot!

Easy to set up and use. Add the wax and allow to melt and insert the chain on the provided wire rope. Allow the wax to work its way into the chain and then allow it to "drip dry". The chain cools quickly and is ready to install on the bike. I prefer to wax a couple chains at a time which enables me to have one ready to install while the bike is still on the stand when I'm doing my periodic maintenance.

While the crock pot method works, Silca's waxing system is much easier and faster. Cleanup is simpler especially if you're not having to return the crock pot to the kitchen for a future meal!

A waxed chain doesn't attract the dirt and grim of a oiled chain, and runs more smoothly. The frequency of chain maintenance is less for a waxing than oiling.

Made me a convert to waxing

I've been cycling for 15 years on an amateur basis between races, commuting and overall fitness. A handful of people had encouraged me to wax my chain for a while, but their description made it seem the payoff wasn't worth the effort at

The time. I'm fairly busy and I don't have time to sit and look over a crockpot or have ultrasonic cleaning like I'm baking cakes or watching paint dry. But, the simplicity of this in how easy it is to do made me rethink. It's so simple, I basically walk away, put a timer on and do other things in the garage while waxing chains. So quiet, so smooth, and honestly my favorite benefit is my bike stays cleaner overall. I spend less time maintaining my bike and drivetrain because the bike doesn't pick up nearly as much debris like I would get from using lubes. The chain stripper made this super easy as well to wax chains that weren't new on my bikes. Probably my best purchase and most satisfying maintenance advice I could give to anyone. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Muc-Off Drivetrain Cleaner

An excellent drivetrain cleaner, just know that it's got diluted petroleum distllates in it. If using with a waxed chain, remove it first.

Great product, strips grease and grime pretty quickly. It does contain petroleum distillates, which are diluted enough to not be flammable and not be caustic to your drivetrain/paint job. Does a great job of stripping wax too! That being said, do not spray it on your chain if you just waxed it. It will break down the wax and remove it in a few minutes. I recommend removing your wheel / cassette beforehand, and be sure you thoroughly rinse down the areas you've sprayed the cleaner. It will leave an oily residue if you don't. Also, wear gloves - even though it's biodegradable it's not great for your skin.

Waxing is great, increasing the time between waxing is even better.

I've been waxing chains for a while and there's nothing like it for a clean smooth running chain. The drawbacks are needing the equipment and taking the time to do it properly. Reducing the number of times you need to rewax a chain is an obvious advantage. It definitely increases the longevity, but is it 3X? Perhaps not but that might dependent on your riding (Gravel versus Road, fair weather only or lots of riding in rain). I wax multiple chains at a time so I can put a fresh chain on the bike and set the old one aside until they both need fresh wax, that alone reduces the number of times I have to cook the chains by 1/2. The Endurance Chip means I'll need to do that even less.
