Fire away.

Shimano cranked out a cream-of-the-crop XC and cyclocross shoe with their S-Phyre XC9. A one piece synthetic leather upper features their Surround wrap technology combined with perforated dimple vents to give you a glove-like fit, and it's secured with two BOA IP1 for precise tension adjustment that can be quickly changed on the fly.

Shimano bonds the upper to the ultra-rigid carbon sole using a technique that forgoes the traditional lasting board between the footbed and outsole, which results in a lower stack height, improved stability, and increased power transfer. An off-road specific outsole was designed in partnership with Michelin to create an optimized tread design for traction, durability, mud-shedding, and low weight. Inside quick-dry 3D mesh and Silvadurâ„¢ antimicrobial insoles makes sure your feet are as fresh as can be, even while you're firing away off the front.

Claimed weight is 325 g (size 42). Compatible with standard 2-bolt MTB cleats.

  • A one-piece surround upper, narrow bottom, rounded heel and slim toe box provide a glove-like fit
  • Low stack height sole helps stabilize foot during the downward pedaling stroke
  • Extra-range BOA micro-adjusters with instant release spools
  • Asymmetric eyestay pattern prevents twisting of foot under high power pedaling
  • Proprietary Michelin outsole minimizes weight, and offers increased traction
  • Extra-long climbing spikes for cyclocross and wet-condition applications
  • Reinforced spike mount for extreme conditions

Comfortable out of the box, but durabilty concerns.

Very comfortable out of the box. Stiff as advertised. Upper is very supple and easily forms to foot, however scuffs very easily (rock gardens) and the reinforcement around the toes isn't particularly robust. The lugged sole is grippy, but the soft rubber may not fare well over long repeated hike-a-bikes on hard, rocky terrain. Sizing runs a full size different than Sidi (insole from XC9 size 44.5 is identical to Sidi Drakos 45.5).

Spending long days in the saddle grinding gravel requires the most comfortable high performance shoes. Awesome fit and stiff soles are a must! Worth every penny!
