An impressive value. The new Giro Privateer R MTB shoe delivers high-performance features with more affordable materials.
Improving upon the previous generation, the Privateer R ramps up its toughness with a co-molded rubber / nylon outsole that grips rocks and roots while also being able to take a beating from rough terrain. The toe box has also been reinforced to better protect you from impacts on the fly, and as before, toe spike compatibility gives you the option to really dig into sloppy conditions.
Giro's upper material is a breathable, lightweight microfiber which conforms to the shape of your foot for a nearly custom feel. The last shape has been extensively tested for all-day comfort, and the molded EVA footbed has been designed specifically for improved arch support. Aegis antimicrobial treatment has also been added to effectively resist odor. Two wide off-set straps and midfoot D-ring ensure a secure fit while helping eliminate pressure points, and the micro-adjust ratcheting buckle (replaceable) offers even further fit adjustment.
The Privateer R weighs 375 grams in size 42.5. Compatible with standard two-bolt MTB cleats.

Excellent fit and performance.

I bought these shoes on sale as an alternative to top-of-the-line mtb shoes I usually use for mtb'ing. I was tired of tearing up my CX shoes doing more all-mountain riding, so I decided to give these a shot. The fit is more forgiving (wider) than the Giro Empire shoes. I upgraded the insole and really love these shoes. Honestly, when pedaling I don't notice the softer sole (it's nylon, not carbon), and when I have to get off the bike it's great not to clunk around as much. They seem reasonably ventilated, in fact they feel cooler and lighter than my Empires (although supposedly they're a bit heavier). Giro's run small-size up a half size.
