A newly overhauled (NHO) device is a device that was returned to Garmin to be factory refurbished. Newly overhauled devices go through extensive testing to bring the devices up to the same specifications as when they were manufactured as new, maintaining high-quality standards. Newly overhauled devices will still have a one year manufacturer's warranty when purchased from a Garmin dealer.

The Garmin Edge 820 puts a color touchscreen and advanced mapping functions into the same size unit as the Edge 520, but it is much more powerful. With the Edge 820, the pre-installed Garmin Cycle Map provides turn-by-turn cycling-specific navigation, address search, points-of-interest, audio prompts, and even a round-trip Course Creator that will design a custom local route based on rider preferences for length and difficulty.

ANT+, WiFi, and Bluetooth connectivity allows for compatibility with power meters and Garmin Varia devices, along with allowing text, call, and other notifications from a paired smartphone. It also makes possible Garmin's GroupTracking feature that allows other Edge 820 users to join together to show real time positions, useful for keeping track of riders when they get split up, or for locating the exact position of a group ride when meeting up.

Performance data at your fingertips.

Advanced performance metrics include VO2 max, recovery advisor, FTP, performance condition, stress score, and other cycling dynamics when used with a heart rate strap, and power metrics include left-right power balance and power phase for determining evenness of pedalling. Strava Live Segments allows real-time KOM tracking with premium accounts, and while paired to a smartphone, built-in incident detection can send a message to an emergency contact in case of an accident.

All this data is easy to see on the 2.3" high-resolution color touch screen. Its ambient light sensor automatically adjusts for the best visibility in all conditions, and the touch functions are designed to work even when wet or when the user is wearing gloves. When power is running low, a battery-save mode shuts off the display while still recording GPS location and providing notifications, extending the remaining battery life by up to 50%.

Features:

  • 2.3" display
  • Unit measures 1.9" x 2.9" x 0.8"
  • Claimed weight is 2.4 oz. / 67g
  • 15 hour battery life in GPS training mode
  • Rated IPX7 waterproof
  • 16 GB internal memory
  • Ability to upload custom maps and courses
  • Smart notifications, weather, livetrack, incident detection and more
  • Includes standard and out-front handlebar mounts, USB charging cable, tether, and user manuals

First GPS
by Anonymous

This is the first stand alone GPS that I have owned. Previously I was using the free version of Strava on my phone. I love the turn by turn navigation and that it syncs up with my off brand cadence and heart rate sensors.

Nice GPS and great price

This is the first GPS bike computer I have owned. I always got by with a speed and cadence pickup to the display on my handlebars. This is so much nicer with so much functionality. It was a "refurbished" unit, but it looks brand new and I haven't had any problems with it. Not looking back....

I didn't see any advantage over the 520

I tried it twice but I didn't like the way to change the pages. I had to do screen swipes which didn't work well specially when wearing a glove. I prefer in this regard the 520 and the 530. I didn't see that the 820 offered any advantage over the 520. About the same size. It worked well when I didn't try to flip pages or change function.

Garmin 820

Fantastic! Touch screen. Easy to use and keep more data and stats than my 520. Best part? Less expensive than the 520 and does more!

Like the mapping features

Pros: Mapping is nice, can configure the pages to your desires. Can setup multiple Bikes. Syncs easily. Has features to show text messages and phone calls. I got a NHO version so the price was fantastic on sale

Cons: The batter life is not nearly as good as my 6 year garmin 800. I'm slow but go long - this is gonna be an issue for me in the summer months. I also wish the device was a little big larger.

Worst Garmin Unit I have owned

I have owned a couple of units (510, 520, 820, 830). 820 is the worst in terms of battery life. I love the 830 but will never ask anyone to buy 820.

Easy to use and install. The app is what makes it a solid 5/5. I like having it connect to my Strava account as well.

Have to be careful not to leave it on. 820 can dim so you think it's off. Left on, battery drains quickly. Excellent otherwise.

My wife uses it, it seems like a great product. It does have a problem, however, with cross talk between our HRMs.
