This is still the same tire you know and love, complete with fast and durable Black Chili tread, but it's been updated more grip and durability than ever before.

The new 4000 S II really does deliver on all fronts, combining speed and amazing handling with impressive puncture resistance and extended tread life. Just like the original GP 4000 S, this is one of the fastest, most durable, and best-riding tires available. In fact, it's even better—Conti claims that thanks to continued R & D, they're able to improve the venerable Black Chili compound by 3-4% every year, so the new model has even better adhesion in wet and dry conditions, better durability, and lower rolling resistance.

For those not clued into Black Chili, this is the lingo Conti uses for their top rubber. As the name implies, it can only be made in black—hence this tire's all-black center tread. In a nutshell, Black Chili is an incredibly dense rubber, made up of particles roughly ten times smaller than those typically used in bike tires. Placing this wonder compound directly at the contact patch results in a tire that's not only more durable, but more able to conform to (grip) the road. It's also more resistant to UV rays, helping it to resist cracking and premature tire wear. Add colorful sidewall options to the mix and you've got the best of both worlds, performance and style.

The tire also features Conti's patented Vectran puncture protection barrier underneath the tread. Originally developed by NASA in the construction of space shuttles and suits, Vectran is a tough but lightweight material that allows Conti to keep their tires extremely light while providing tremendous puncture protection.

The Grand Prix 4000 S features three fabric plies for a total of 330 TPI, and has a Kevlar folding bead and a max inflation pressure of 120 PSI. This version is available in 650c (571 ISO).

The BEST tire I've ever ridden on.

I am on my second set of the GP 4000 S ll tires. I got a little over 5,800 miles on them before I rode over something that sliced the front and I have over 3,400 miles on the second pair. The thing that stands out the most for me is the high quality of the ride. For many years I rode on Gator Skins and would typically get 6,000 miles on a set before I would change them, but the ride is quite harsh. I ride quite a bit of rural chipseal roads and the GP 4000 S ll really take out most of that annoying vibration and buzz - I was amazed! I was able to ride further and faster because I wasn't as fatigued. They are kind of expensive, but man! the ride is worth it.

I've got over 2000 miles on these tires on my recumbent and I have been very happy with the performance. The tire is much lighter than the stock tires that came with the bike, which helps going uphill. On my rims it's closer to a 25 than a 23, which makes for better road contact and a more sensitive road feel, which helps my confidence going downhill at 50 mph. So far I have no big cuts or knicks, and haven't had a single flat due to puncture. My rear tire is close to the wear mark limit, so I'm ordering a new pair right now.

I've got 1000 miles on these tires so far, including 5 miles of gravel road, with no flats, nicks or cuts and minimal wear. They grip the road well, and though they are listed as 23mm wide I find they are closer to 25mm on my rims, which gives a softer ride than the similar Kenda tire. A reasonable balance between weight and reliability. I will buy these again.
