Stability shoes are shoes with cushioning features in high strike areas (heel and forefoot), but more substantial supportive features in the midfoot area. These shoes are designed for the runner with a medium to flat arch with mild to moderate overpronation (rolling of the ankle and collapsing of the arch inward excessively). There are different levels of stability as well as different support philosophies that vary between shoe companies.

Stability Shoes are divided into 3 categories:

MAXIMUM STABILITY RUNNING SHOES Top of the line, all the bells and whistles, training stability shoe

This shoe category is for you if you’re looking for:

  • Stability shoes that can withstand HIGH mileage

  • You are a bigger runner and harder on shoes

  • You’re looking for maximum support and adding cushioning in forefoot and heel

  • Can be used in all race distances with maximal support

    MODERATE STABILITY RUNNING SHOES Average mileage, run of the mill, stability shoes

    This shoe category is for you if you’re looking for:

  • Stability shoes for average training mileage, and marathon distance races (can be worn for all distances)

    PERFORMANCE STABILITY RUNNING SHOES More substantial shoes than racing shoes, but designed for performance training and racing

    This shoe category is for you if you’re looking for:

  • A shoe more substantial and supportive than a racing flat, but lighter in weight (you sacrifice cushioning for the lighter weight)

  • A shoe that will give you the support you need in races from the half marathon and up
