    The Science:
  • The calories in GU's Roctane drink come from its proprietary blend of maltodextrin and fructose (complex and simple carbohydrates). Complex Carbohydrates are long chains of sugars. Humans store them as glycogen in the muscles and liver. In the Roctane drink, maltodextrin is an easily digestible, complex carbohydrate derived from corn. Maltodextrin (a glucose polymer) provides a large amount of energy without being too sweet.

    Simple Carbohydrates in the Roctane drink come from fructose, a fruit sugar, which converts to glucose more slowly. Fructose is mainly metabolized to glucose in the liver.

    Over the years, this two part carbohydrate system has been shown to maintain glucose levels as a preloading food before intense short competitions or for many hours over endurance events. The combination of maltodextrin and fructose will also lead to greater muscle glycogen resynthesis after exercise (better recovery).

    Consumption of carbohydrates during endurance events can delay fatigue and improve athletic performance by preventing hypoglycemia and maintaining high rates of carbohydrate oxidation during the final stages of exercise, when glycogen stores are low. Quite simply, carbohydrates are the body's primary energy source. Unfortunately however, carbohydrates are not stored in inexhaustible amounts. A 150?pound man has about 1500?1800 calories of carbohydrate in the liver, blood and muscles. The amount of glycogen that a person has, ultimately will determine how long they can maintain exercise. When glycogen levels are depleted the ability to exercise decreases. Inadequate amounts of carbohydrate can force the body to begin to use a less efficient source of fuel for energy, protein or fat. By consuming adequate levels of carbohydrates, other energy sources like protein and fat do not have to be sacrificed as fuel and consequently higher intensity exercise can be prolonged. Protein can then be used as a substrate for tissue growth and repair. GU's Roctane drink has slightly more than double the number of carbohydrate calories when compared to standard Electrolyte Brew yet its formulation is optimized for efficient absorption.

    Amino Acid Complex:
  • Protein is stored in the body as muscle. When the body uses protein for fuel, it will either, use amino acids in the bloodstream from previously consumed food (Roctane Drink) or breakdown muscle. Each protein is made up of various combinations of amino acids. Our dietary protein requirement is to fulfill the need for amino acids. These molecules (20 of them) make up all of the proteins in our diet. Nine of these are essential (this number can vary depending on age, etc.), which means that our body cannot synthesize them and are therefore are required in our diet on a daily basis. All amino acids are broken down in the liver except for 3 of the essential amino acids: leucine, valine and isoleucine, the branched?chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are taken up by the muscle. Muscle protein is constantly being made and broken down. The recommended dietary intake for protein in the normal adult is 1g/kg body weight daily, while endurance athletes have greater daily needs for protein intake of 1.2?1.8g/kg/ body weight to maintain protein balance. This level of protein intake for strength and endurance athletes is about 150?200% above RDA for the normal adult.
