Best small bike computer
July 20, 2017
I chose the 520 because it is small - but still easy to read - and lightweight. I can easily read 6 lines of data and scroll through pages if I want more data during the ride. On my bike I needed to see more data than can show on 1 screen on my Garmin 920 watch and it is way easier to read than the 920. Super easy to upload to Garmin Connect.
Pros:
Small but shows lots of data. Great clarity!

Great GPS functionality!
March 6, 2016
I upgraded to the Garmin 520 from the Garmin 500 last September. In addition to wanting to be able to upload my files directly to my mobile device via Bluetooth, I also wanted a computer that had a GPS functionality for longer rides. The Garmin 810 and 1000 were all great options, but the devices looked too big in my opinion. The size of the 520 is about the size of the 500, which fits perfectly between the areo bars of a TT bike or on the stem of a roadie. I was looking forward to not having to stop and look at my phone to figure out where I was and where to go. That tends to take some of the fun out of the ride. In addition to all the great functionalities that we are all familiar with by now (connect to your phone, uploads to your mobile devices and apps like Connect, Strava, TrainingPeak, mapmyride, allows you to pair your HR, power meter, cadence sensor, etc.), the 520 becomes an incredible training tool when you decide to explore new roads. I finally got to test it out last weekend on my long ride in a completely new area. After creating my route on Garmin Connect, it was very easy to sync it to my 520. On your computer you can see all your data, and if you scroll down the screens, the computer will show you where you are on the map. The computer will only tell you if you are off course. If you stay on, ride on. In addition, it won't give you turn-by-turn steps, but if you familiarize yourself with the ride before you get on your bike (and thats probably a good idea, anyway), I dont think you need the GPS to tell you where to turn. Youll be fixating on your computer instead of enjoying your ride. The map isnt as detailed as a google GPS, but again, the computer shows your route, and if you want more details, you can zoom in close enough to see road intersections. As it turned out, I forgot my phone that day and relied 100% on the GPS functionality. I enjoyed my ride thoroughly and made it home just fine. I would go back and forth between my data screen and the map to make sure that I stay on course. I loved it and will be exploring a LOT more now that I know the GPS functionality works! Happy riding!
